World Earth Day St John’s celebrated Earth Day with this year’s theme ‘Our Power, Our Planet’.
As a whole school we thought about why is it important to take care of our planet and what we can all do to look after it. We looked at Article 24 of the UNCRC: We have a right to a clean environment and we read Genesis 2:15. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” From the first book of the Bible, God tells us that it is our responsibility to care for our planet.
All our children agreed that every day should be Earth Day! The children also found out about renewable and non-renewable energy and the advantages of renewable energy: no pollution, creates jobs and helps to make our planet cleaner.
The children engaged in Earth Day activities in class to reinforce the message about working together to protect our planet.
Year 5 wrote thoughtful pledges, committing to actions like reducing waste, saving energy, and caring for nature. Their inspiring promises were displayed to remind everyone that small steps can lead to big change.
Year 4 spoke about the importance of treating our world in a way that will let it flourish. They spent time in our beautiful surroundings, creating images of themselves adorned with nature crowns. They chose 'special' leaves to put into their flower press, which they then used to create a nature hanging.
Year 2 designed posters and Years 1 and 3 thought about what they could do to protect our planet.
