COP30 (The 30th Conference of the Parties) is an essential global meeting where world leaders gather to discuss and set crucial targets for tackling climate change. For our children, it represents a conversation about their future and the health of the planet they will inherit. It's a key opportunity for them to see global issues being addressed and to understand that their voices matter.

As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility and in line with the UK government’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy for education settings, we are committed to equipping our pupils with the knowledge to address global challenges.

This week the children participated in a thought-provoking webinar, focused on empowering them to become active participants in the global climate conversation.

The session directly linked to fundamental principles:

  • UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Article 13: This right ensures that children can seek, receive, and impart information and ideas of all kinds, empowering them to speak out on issues that affect their future, such as climate change.

  • British Value - Rule of Law: By learning how to hold world leaders accountable for their agreed-upon climate promises, the children are engaging with the principle that all people and institutions, even governments, are subject to and accountable under the law.

This experience gave the children a sense of purpose, showing them, they are not just recipients of the climate crisis, but agents of change.

We encourage you to talk to your child about how they feel they can contribute to a safer, healthier world for all

Reception

Watched a Go Jetters episode and read the book - Alba the hundred-year-old fish. They then looked at posters on anti-littering. The children made their own anti-littering posters.

Year 1 and Year 2

Watched a short documentary about our oceans and plastic pollution. The children designed their own posters to show how we can protect our oceans.

Year 3

The children created colourful posters showing ways to tackle climate change, such as recycling, planting trees, and using renewable energy.

Year 4

The children designed posters to show various ways in which they could positively impact climate change.

Year 5

Designed posters to show how we can protect the planet.

Year 6

Held a class discussion after the webinar and started to formulate a bank of questions for us to take to our world leaders and challenge them on how we are going to meet the promises and goals that they have made.

"The animals might lose their homes when the forests get too hot. World leaders need to remember they are deciding the future for the animals, not just for grown-ups." Sophia

"I learned that my voice matters, even though I'm only six!” Youssouf

“The Earth needs us to be kind to it, like we are kind to our friends." Millie

"I think COP30 is like when our school council meets, but for the whole world! They make the rules for the planet, and we need to make sure they are good rules that everyone follows." Theo
