Mathematics
At St John’s, we provide a high-quality mathematical education that inspires confidence, resilience, and curiosity. Through engaging lessons, children develop fluency, solve problems, and reason with accuracy, appreciating mathematics as a lifelong tool for understanding the world.
We use a ‘teaching for mastery’ approach, building understanding through small steps, practice, and discussion. Supported by the White Rose scheme in Years 1–5.
In Reception, we use in-the-moment planning and a continuous provision approach to support the learning of mathematics that is in-line with the Early Years Statutory Framework.
In Year 6, we tailor teaching to prepare pupils for SATs and secondary school with a personalised curriculum.
To secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 also follow the NCETM Mastering Number programme.
Aims
The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
-
reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
-
can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Assessment
For end-of-term assessments, we use Test Base papers that assess the full range of areas we cover over the 3 terms. This enables us to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of our teaching and support children where necessary.
Monitor Your Child's Progress
Please see the schemes of learning below as a guide to the maths we are covering in each year group.
The following publication demonstrates the progression from year 1 to year 6 whilst summarising the most important knowledge and understanding within each year group: Mathematics Guidance
Maths Calculation Policy
The Calculation Policy shows the methods we use in school. This will help you when supporting your child with Maths Homework or just helping them with any new maths concepts that they have learned in school.

Supporting your child at home
The following websites use methods that are up-to-date with the national curriculum and can support you when helping your child with maths at home:
Maths Passports
Our Numeracy Passports should help children learn the mental math skills necessary for them to achieve throughout their time at St. John’s. We believe this system will allow children to know exactly what they need to learn next and help you understand what you can do to assist them.
How to use the passport to help your child travel around the solar system
-
A list of targets will be sent home for your child to practice. These will be grouped in a “Planet” of skills.
-
They should aim to become fluent in answering questions based on these targets. They may find it easiest to work on one target at a time.
Your child’s teacher will check on their progress approximately once per half term.
How you practise these targets depends on you and your child, but it should not be a chore for either of you,
here are some ideas
-
Sing or chant tables.
-
Use any spare time to practise- the journey to school, during an advert break, whilst cooking dinner etc.
-
Use dice or playing cards to make up games to play together.
-
Make flashcards for quick recall.
-
Ask your child to answer questions that are related to mathematical problems in your daily life.
Mathletics
Mathletics is a targeted, rewarding and captivating online learning resource, which is aligned with curriculum standards. Your child has take-home access to Mathletics – they simply sign in with their school username and password using any compatible computer or mobile device. The extra Mathletics practice at home can make all the difference to your child’s progress!
