St John’s was filled with the spirit of discovery as we celebrated the milestone 100th birthday of the legendary naturalist, Sir David Attenborough. From our youngest learners in Nursery to our budding scientists in Year 6, every child took part in honouring a man who has dedicated his life to protecting our planet.
Our youngest explorers focused on the magic of the natural world and the significance of the number 100. A highlight of the day for Nursery was the "Attenbear" Picnic, where they enjoyed homemade birthday cakes in the forest alongside their favourite teddy bears, capped off with a spirited rendition of "Happy Birthday!" While Reception expressed their love for wildlife by painting animals, creating shape-based art, and building bird feeders to support our local feathered friends.
Year 1 researched and wrote about the goats, then took to the microphone! They practiced their best "Attenborough voices," recording themselves reading their facts with that iconic dramatic flair.
Taking inspiration from the documentary Life in Colour, Year 2 explored the science of camouflage. They also turned their talents to portraiture, mastering the art of colour mixing to create a stunning class portrait of Sir David, focusing on realistic skin tones, highlights, and shadows.
Year 5 took a moment to reflect on Sir David’s incredible legacy and the beauty of the animal kingdom. Combining science and art, the students focused on nocturnal creatures. They utilised the technique of pointillism (using tiny dots of color to build an image) to create a large, collaborative class collage. The process was both calming and creative, allowing the children to bring the wonders of the night to life in a way Sir David would surely admire.
Through these activities, our children haven't just celebrated a birthday; they have reaffirmed their commitment to being the next generation of planet protectors.
Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David!
