Global Neighbours

The Global Neighbours programme is an accreditation scheme developed by Christian Aid to help primary schools in England grow into communities that are:

  • Globally aware

  • Socially responsible

  • Actively engaged in justice and advocacy

It encourages schools to embed global citizenship into everyday school life, through the curriculum, collective worship, school leadership, and pupil voice.

As part of our commitment to Global Neighbours, we:

  • Teach pupils about global issues through subjects like Geography, RE, PSHE, and themed weeks

  • Encourage pupil voice through our School Council, Faith Group and Rights Ambassadors

  • Organise events like Global Dignity Week, Earth Day, Global Toilet Day, World Ocean Day, Unicef Global Goals Day and fundraising for global causes

  • Promote values of dignity, respect, and courageous advocacy in everything we do

At St John’s, we are committed to empowering our pupils to become global citizens, and to grow up in a world where they feel confident to speak up and act against injustice and poverty.  We encourage children to be agents of change, with real opportunities to help to transform lives.

This year, as a Global Neighbour School,  we have driven and participated  in:

Harvest

The whole school celebrate Harvest Festival through drama, song and reflective prayer.   Whole school made Harvest festival donations to share with local food bank.

Reverse Advent Calendar

Our reverse advent donations supported numerous families during Christmas and assisted many  individuals in crisis this winter.

Shoe Box Appeal

As Global Neighbours our school focused on helping children around the world by encouraging our school community to support the Shoe Box Appeal. In a whole-school worship they explained what items could be included in the shoe boxes. We received a generous number of donations, and these shoe boxes we are sure t brought joy to many children this Christmas.

Christian Aid Week

Our pupils are always incredibly keen to show kindness and wanting to help other children around the world. They were, therefore, very keen to participate in Christian Aid Week from May 11th to May 15th.

The whole school looked cheerful as children "Dressed to Express", coming to school in their most colourful, favourite outfits that truly show off their personalities.

Throughout the week, children had the opportunity to express their thoughts and prayers for our Global Neighbours. These messages were attached to the fence running along the Hogsmill River to create a beautiful display of our school's support.

Year 3 cleaning up our local environment

Earth Day!

During Earth Week our children have been incredibly busy looking after their environment and putting their green thumbs to the test. They have had a wonderful time getting outdoors and planting seeds, beautiful flowers, potatoes, cress and sunflower seeds! Alongside weeding the flowerbeds and enthusiastically picking up litter to keep our grounds clean, they have been learning that every small action, whether it’s remembering to recycle, turning off the classroom lights, or simply picking up a piece of litter on the playground, can make a massive difference in nurturing God's creation for a greener, healthier future.

Recycling

Our Recycling monitors wanted to make the school aware of the importance of recycling. When we throw things away, they often end up in big piles of rubbish called landfills. These can take up lots of space and can harm the environment. Every year, people throw away over 2 billion tonnes of waste, and we want to make the waste cleaner!

Global Dignity Day

On Global Dignity Day, our school held a special assembly to celebrate the importance of dignity in our community and the world. RSS Children Ambassadors shared powerful messages on what dignity truly means—respect, kindness, and equality for all. They reminded us of the Article 1 which states that dignity is our inherent value and worth as human beings; everyone is born with it, and Article 28 that as duty bearers we need to ensure that in school children’ rights are always respected and that they are consistent with the child’s human dignity.

“I think Dignity means that we should treat everyone the way we want to be treated. It means being kind to one another.” Georgia

We feel our dignity is being respected when..

  • We are being included.

  • Cared for and loved.

  • When we are being listened to.

  • Supported

  • When we are learning.

World Toilet Day 2026

Our RRS Ambassadors led our World Toilet Day assembly.   This is an annual United Nations observance day to tackle the global sanitation crisis. Our RRS Ambassadors raised awareness of the 3.5 billion people living without safe toilets and 2.2 billion people living without safe drinking water. They were keen to link this to Article 24: Every child has the right to good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment.

Year 4 Global Citizens

Year 4 has taken an active role in improving the lives of others.  They raised money for children in hospitals through a Read-a-thon.  They also raised money from their class art exhibition, to buy books for our Partner school in Malawi, M’khalapadzuwa.

Global Neighbours through the curriculum

Following their work on the rainforest, Year 3 designed Fairtrade posters and wrote to their local supermarket asking them to consider selling more Fairtrade products. (UNCRC Articles 2 & 24). Year 3 also investigated the big problem of Climate Change: its cause, its effects and the solution. They came up with ideas for saving energy, recycling, and protecting nature.

Year 4 raised awareness of food waste in school and  linked this to the global food crisis around the world. They  weighed waste from lunches, spoke out in worship about food and food waste. Year 4 also designed posters to show various ways in which they could positively impact climate change.

Year 5 collected items for Save the World Charity. They produced posters for the charity to increase awareness of this local charity as well as raising awareness of poverty in the local area. Year 5 also explored global warming and its impact. Year 5 looked at the connection between water and Climate Change and how its impacted lives in Bolivia, Senegal and Bangladesh. They investigated plastic pollution along the  Hogsmill river and the impact of plastic pollution on the planet. They designed posters to tell the local community about reusing, recycling plastics and made an apron out of plastic found. Year 5 looked at the importance of education for all. They wrote to our local MP, Ed Davey as they wanted to play their part to help more children receive a quality education.

Year 6 explored the causes and effects of global poverty. They produced a display on solutions to global poverty: what they could give to fight poverty, how they could act to make the world better and their hopes and wishes for the future. They explored how poverty prevented people from living life to the full.  Year 6 explored the causes and effects of global poverty. Christian Aid Big Spring Sing

We took part in the Southwark Diocese Board of Education’s first Christian Aid Big Spring Sing. We value Christian Aid as an important charity because it supports people in need, regardless of their background, appearance, or beliefs. The charity works to address complex global issues and helps communities recover from natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, droughts, and the effects of climate change.

At our school, we follow Christian Aid’s example by fundraising and supporting our partner school, M’khalapadzuwa, in Malawi. We help by raising money for essential resources such as stationery, water pumps, and a minibus.

Unicef Global Goals Assembly

Throughout the year our Rights Ambassadors have been helping us understand the 17 Global Goals agreed by the United Nations to end extreme poverty and improve our world by 2030.

Our Rights Ambassadors continue to remind us to think about what we can do to make the world a safer, fairer and more sustainable place in which our rights are protected and respected. They regularly remind us about the importance, however small this may be, to do our part.

Our Rights Ambassadors and School Council continue to be active citizens, working hard to bring about positive change. They have been keen to support charities in order to seek to improve equality for all. They are courageous advocates for the environment by enthusiastically checking that the classrooms are energy saving by turning off lighting when they are not needed, litter picking in the school grounds and along the Hogsmill river, weeding and planting to improve our school grounds and helping with recycling.
